Vianden Castle is the most-visited tourist attraction in Luxembourg, and it earns that title honestly -- a turreted, extensively restored castle perched on a cliff above the Our River, with roughly two hours' worth of rooms to explore and an audioguide covering its history (including the dramatic fact that it was once completely dismantled and sold for scrap before later restoration). The town below is genuinely charming in its own right, with cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and a Victor Hugo connection -- the author lived here in exile and a small museum in his former residence tells that story.
For the best views, ride the Vianden Chairlift, the only one in the Grand Duchy, climbing from 220 to 440 meters over the Our Valley to a viewpoint looking back at both the castle and the town spread out below. It runs April through mid-October only, with a small cafe at the top. Most of the castle tour is indoors, making Vianden a solid choice even on a rainy day.

Local tip: The chairlift only runs April through mid-October -- check before planning a winter visit around it. Bring sturdy footwear if you plan to walk back down from the chairlift's top station rather than ride down. Free parking is available near the village using a blue parking disc.
