Kirn

Kirn is a small, easy option in the Nahe Valley, a genuine local town rather than a heavily touristed stop. Towering above it are the ruins of the Kyrburg, a castle built in 960 and destroyed by the French in 1734 -- free to wander through, with panoramic views over the surrounding landscape, and a Whisky Museum Restaurant and Pub now operating on-site if you want to make a stop of it. Down in town, the family-owned Kirner Brauerei supplies much of the beer consumed in the surrounding region and offers 3.5-hour German-language tours (Tuesdays and Thursdays) including tastings. Kirn was historically a stronghold of the leather industry, and a handful of local factory outlets still carry on that tradition today. It's a genuinely quiet, low-key stop -- good for a relaxed afternoon rather than a packed sightseeing day, and easy to combine with Idar-Oberstein or Bad Kreuznach if you want to see more of the Nahe Valley in one trip.
