Idar-Oberstein has been the center of Germany's gemstone trade for over 400 years, ever since agate, jasper, and quartz deposits were discovered in the hills around town. When local deposits dried up in the 1800s, Idar-Oberstein's gem cutters emigrated to Brazil, found similar stones there, and kept shipping them back -- the town still imports, cuts, and polishes gems from around the world today, and around a million shoppers visit annually for semi-precious stones, ornamental rocks, and jewelry. The town's most striking sight has nothing to do with gems, though: the Felsenkirche ("Church in the Rock"), built into a niche in a cliff face roughly 200 feet above the valley, reached by climbing 216 steps including a tunnel blasted through solid rock. Down in town, the German Gem Museum spans four floors, and the newer Edelstein-Erlebniswelt (Gemstone Adventure World) offers a more playful, family-oriented version of the same story, complete with an amethyst throne. Worth knowing: Idar-Oberstein was once part of the Baumholder military community itself, with a storage base and an artillery Kaserne nearby that closed in 2008 -- a genuine, direct historical connection to the base, not just a nearby town.
